In 1983 he left France, travelling first to Central America before eventually arriving in New York in the early 1990s. There he studied photography at the International Center of Photography, where Larry Clark and Nan Goldin were among his teachers. During the same period he worked in the editorial department of Magnum Photos.

His first two photobooks, De Mala Muerte and Mala Noche, appeared in 1998.
