In the middle of a seemingly empty field, the artist installed a slender wooden post—just six centimetres wide and one and a half metres tall—and mounted a motion-sensor camera to face it. The result is a sublime and almost mystical series of photographs that capture birds visiting this unexpected stage: perching, feeding, resting, flying, or simply pausing mid-motion.

Far from being merely observational, these images open a portal into a hidden world—one that exists all around us but often escapes our notice. Across 176 pages and 172 black-and-white images, the book moves between two settings photographed by Mizoguchi in the 1990s and 2000s — Kyoto and Enoshima — held together less by a shared subject than by a consistent method of looking.

The Kyoto section is built from women and passersby set against the city's historical weight: a face turned mid-motion, cloth against skin, the particular density of light in older streets. His fantasy and supernatural writing influenced a subsequent generation of major Japanese authors. The 2016 publication was produced on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the play, with critical commentary by Tamaki Anakura (穴倉玉日) and the Izumi Kyoka Memorial Museum. The works are principally reproduced artworks presented with titles, captions, and publication material in both Japanese and English. Yamamoto's characteristic mode — the Heisei Decadence style — positions the body as a site of desire, mortality, and ornamental excess, indebted to Ukiyo-e conventions while departing from them toward a more overtly symbolist and erotic register.

Physical Specifications

Format: hardcover with black patterned sleeve. Working across illustration, book cover art, and advertising, he developed and refined a visual mode he termed Ukiyo-e Pop, later extending it into what he calls the Heisei Decadence style — a synthesis of traditional Japanese woodblock print aesthetics with arabesque-grotesque ornament, decadent figuration, and dreamlike horror. He has produced illustrations for aesthetic, fantasy, erotic, and historical novels, and is a member of the International Ukiyo-e Society.

Other Works by Takato Yamamoto

Further titles by Takato Yamamoto available at Lokator100, including other volumes in the New Black Edition series:

Altar of Narcissus

Divertimento for a Martyr

Rib of a Hermaphrodite

Coffin of a Chimera

Tale of a Castle Keep

Grass Labyrinth

Japonesthétique

NOSFERATU

Necrophantasmagoria Vanitas

Dispatch

Dispatched from Germany, next business day, tracked shipping, carefully packed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0946/3359/1130/files/allure-of-pharmakon-takato-yamamoto-new-black-edition-front-cover.jpg?v=1788626223
vanitas-toru-kamei
VANITAS — Toru Kamei

VANITAS — Toru Kamei

Toru Kamei's first monograph, published by Editions Treville in 2009. Rather than presenting a straightforward sequence of landscape photographs, Haruka Fujita builds the book as a dialogue between photography and the pictorial language of Japanese sliding-screen and folding-screen painting.

Fujita began by photographing sliding panels covered in gold and silver leaf, sourced from an art-supply shop. These images were printed onto photographic paper, after which she layered further photographs — flowers, trees, birds and other natural subjects, shot on 4×5 film — onto the same sheets. The process was carried out by hand in the darkroom, allowing variations in tone, surface texture and the behaviour of the printing itself to enter the final images. The gold and silver leaf belongs to the panels she photographed as source material; it is not applied to the physical pages of the book, and the hand-printing refers to the making of Fujita's original images rather than to the production of the copies themselves.

The resulting photographs combine dark grounds, layered colour and passages of open space. This visual structure extends into the book's physical form: bound as an accordion, or concertina, the connected pages unfold into a continuous sequence, echoing the relationship between individual painted scenes and a longer picture scroll.

Published by HeHe in Tokyo, this is the 2025 second printing of a book originally issued in 2022.
