Yoshiichi Hara (原芳市), 1948–2019
Yoshiichi Hara was a Tokyo-born photographer who studied at Chiyoda Design Photography Academy before developing a practice that spanned five decades. His work is grounded in the social and subcultural margins of Japanese urban life — strip theatres, night districts, the bodies and spaces that mainstream photography largely passed over. His approach is documentary in method but consistently personal in framing, and his books hold a distinct place within the broader field of Photography & Photobooks.
Hara published extensively across his career, with a significant portion of his later work appearing through Sokyusha, the Tokyo-based independent imprint that has consistently supported serious photographic work outside commercial publishing channels. His relationship with Sokyusha produced several of his most considered books, including titles concerned with light, time, and the texture of disappearing environments.
The title currently available at Lokator100 is Walk while ye have the light - Yoshiichi Hara, published by Sokyusha. It is among the works from the final period of his practice and reflects the quieter, more contemplative register his photography moved toward in later years.
Lokator100 is an independent bookstore based in Germany. Titles ship from Germany with careful packing.
