Julia Soboleva

Julia Soboleva artbooks and books

Julia Soboleva is a Latvia-born, UK-based mixed-media artist. Her work combines painting and collage on found photographic imagery, assembled as sequences that behave like fragments of narrative rather than illustrations of one fixed story.

Practice and materials

Soboleva's method is built on reworking anonymous photographs — painting over, cutting, and re-staging them. The result is a controlled image-language: quiet scenes that hold tension without explaining it. Across her artist books, this sequential quality gives the work a structure that resists straightforward reading.

Themes

• madness and reality
• family, taboo, and transgenerational trauma
• memory, post-Soviet echoes, and dry absurd humour
