Benrido: Collotype Printing and the Preservation of Japanese Cultural Heritage
Benrido began in 1887 as a small rental bookshop in Kyoto before developing into a fine-art photography publisher and print house. Over the following decades, the company built a practice centred on the reproduction of cultural heritage, combining offset and collotype printing with the publishing of fine art editions, image-based conservation work, and museum-related production.
Benrido Collotype Atelier
Collotype was invented in France in 1855 by Alphonse Poitevin as an early photographic printing method. The process reached Kyoto in the 1880s, and Benrido began producing collotype prints in 1905. Because of its exceptional print and archival quality, collotype became closely associated with the reproduction and preservation of Japan's National Treasures and other cultural properties. Benrido Collotype Atelier continues this work today, remaining one of the few studios in the world still able to produce fine colour collotype prints.
Within Lokator100's catalogue, Benrido represents a publisher whose work sits at the intersection of fine-art photography, printing craft, and cultural preservation — a focus consistent with the store's broader interest in photobooks and artist publications chosen for lasting relevance rather than passing attention.
