Mimi Plumb – Photobooks & Artist Publications
Mimi Plumb is a California-based photographer whose practice spans five decades of socially engaged documentary work. Her photographs attend closely to the landscapes, communities, and ecological pressures of the American West — particularly California — across periods of social anxiety, suburban expansion, and environmental change. She holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2022. Her work is held in the collections of SFMOMA, LACMA, the High Museum of Art, and the Art Collection Deutsche Börse, among others.
Landfall (TBW Books, 2018) draws on photographs made in the 1980s to construct a dreamlike picture of American unease. The book was shortlisted for both the Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation First Photobook Award and the Lucie Photo Book Prize in 2019. Megalith-Still (Stanley/Barker, 2023) documents a herd of horses in the High Sierra's John Muir Wilderness, photographed between 1995 and 2005 — a sustained study of animal presence and high-altitude terrain. Hotshoe Issue 209: An Emotional Landscape offers a further point of entry into her practice through critical and editorial context.
