Takato Yamamoto — 山本 タカト
Takato Yamamoto was born in Akita Prefecture, Japan, in 1960. He studied in the painting department of Tokyo Zokei University before turning to illustration as his primary medium. His first solo exhibition was held in Tokyo in 1998, marking the public emergence of a visual language he had been developing for years.
Yamamoto's early work engaged with Ukiyo-e Pop — a mode that draws on the formal conventions of Edo-period woodblock printing and repositions them within a contemporary register. From this foundation he refined what he terms "Heisei estheticism": a style defined by extreme graphic precision, ornamental density, and imagery that occupies the territory of Ero guro, where the erotic and the grotesque are held in deliberate, unresolved tension. The line work is meticulous; the palette, when present, is restrained and ceremonial.
