Zdzisław Beksiński was a Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor, born in Sanok in southern Poland. He studied architecture at Kraków Polytechnic, graduating in 1952, and had no formal training as a visual artist. His paintings were made primarily with oil paint on hardboard panels he prepared himself.

His output falls broadly into two periods. The earlier work is characterised by expressionistic colour and what he described as a style of utopian realism, with surreal architectural forms and an engagement with surrealism that developed through the 1960s. The later period moved toward greater abstraction, with formalism as its dominant feature.

Between these two phases, in the late 1960s, Beksiński entered what he called his fantastic period, which extended into the mid-1980s and remains the body of work for which he is most widely known. During this time he produced images of nightmarish environments — scenes of death and decay, landscapes populated by skeletons and deformed figures, desolate and airless spaces. He described his method as wanting to paint as if photographing dreams. He refused to title any of his works and expressed consistent indifference to interpretation, including his own. A 1964 exhibition organised by Janusz Bogucki in Warsaw marked his first significant public recognition.

In the final decade of his life, Beksiński turned to digital photomontage, working with computers and photo manipulation until his death in 2005. He also wrote short stories between 1963 and 1965, which remained sealed until their posthumous publication in 2015.
