A portfolio of six collotype prints

Birds brings together six photographs selected by Masao Yamamoto from his work with bird imagery. The prints were produced by Benrido in Kyoto using collotype, a gelatin-based printing process capable of reproducing subtle tonal transitions without a conventional halftone screen. Benrido describes the images as drawn from previously published photographs, chosen by the artist and reproduced with close attention to tone and texture.

The six prints are supplied loose, housed in a portfolio case with a protective bag, rather than bound as pages. This allows each image to be handled, arranged, or framed individually. The set belongs to Benrido's Mini Portfolios series, conceived as a way to encounter the publisher's collotype work both in the hand and on display.

Each sheet measures 203 × 254 mm, printed on Takeo Paper Matt Colour HG; the portfolio case measures 206 × 258 × 8 mm. An information leaflet on the collotype process, in English and Japanese, is included. This is an open-edition publication from 2020, produced and printed in Japan.

For collectors following Yamamoto's work through Masao Yamamoto's wider catalogue, or interested in Japanese approaches to photographic print-making, the companion set Birds 2 extends the same selection process and printing method.
