Hugues Micol – GariGari

A Wordless Journey Through a Fantastical Medieval Japan

Set in a mythical version of feudal Japan overrun by giant amphibians, mutant fish, and anthropomorphic yōkai, GariGari follows a gifted young ninja on a precise and perilous mission: to infiltrate a rival clan's camp, recover a mysterious arrow — the sole evidence of an incident that has brought two clans to the brink of war — and expose the traitor behind it. Not a word is spoken. None is needed.

Hugues Micol draws on the grammar of chanbara cinema — the kind of kinetic, sword-driven action associated with Akira Kurosawa — and pushes it into something stranger and more volatile. His linework, rooted in the traditions of engraving, gives the page a dense, physical texture. Combat sequences unfold across vertiginous aerial compositions; creatures loom with the weight of woodblock prints. The visual register is precise where it needs to be and deliberately unruly elsewhere, which is exactly what makes it hold attention.

This is not Micol's first encounter with Japan as a setting. His earlier series Les Contes du 7ème Souffle, made with Éric Adam for Vents d'Ouest, explored historical Japanese adventure over several volumes. GariGari arrives as a more personal and formally ambitious work — published by Éditions Cornélius, with whom Micol has a long-standing relationship going back to the black-and-white fantasy comic 3 and its follow-up Séquelles. The book reads as a consolidation of that history: confident in its strangeness, unhurried in its construction.

For collectors working across Surreal & Experimental Comics, illustration, and Japanese mythology, GariGari is a considered addition. It rewards close reading and tolerates rereading well.
