About the Book
Lowlands began with Swiss photographer Ester Vonplon’s 2016 expedition to Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean. Sailing aboard a three-masted ship through ice-choked waters, she documented the collapsing glaciers and receding ice. Her analog, weather-worn negatives become tactile testaments to a vanishing world.
Inspired by these visual impressions, Taylor Deupree and Marcus Fischer composed an introspective, slowly unfolding ambient score. Their music and Vonplon’s images are not background and foreground—but a shared space, a dialogue.
Published by IIKKI as part of a cross-media series, the book is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.
The accompanying music is available on Bandcamp.
