About Message from the Exterior

Message from the Exterior by Mark Ruwedel looks at small, eccentric desert shelters east of Los Angeles—structures that sit somewhere between humour and quiet failure. The book reads these “desert houses” as vernacular traces: attempts to build a home in a place that resists permanence.

The first part, Desert Houses, presents 68 structures as an inventory of forms and improvisations. The second part, Dusk, photographs houses after sunset. Tones soften, detail recedes, and absence becomes part of the image. Message from the Exterior stays clinical, but never empty.

About Mark Ruwedel

Mark Ruwedel (b. 1954) is an acclaimed American‑Canadian landscape photographer and educator. A recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Scotiabank Photography Award (2014), his work is held in major collections at Tate Modern, Getty Museum, LACMA, SFMOMA, the Met and National Gallery of Art.
