About the Book
Masahisa Fukase’s Ravens is a landmark in the history of photographic books — a haunting exploration of solitude, grief, and artistic identity. Shot between 1975 and 1986, the series follows flocks of ravens across the stark coastal terrain of Hokkaido, Japan, in the emotional aftermath of Fukase’s divorce. The images form a meditative study of movement, emptiness, and disintegration, captured in rich tritone and subtle greys. Often interpreted as a visual metaphor for postwar Japan, Ravens also marks a personal descent into isolation, intensified by the artist’s later accident and withdrawal from consciousness. This facsimile of the rare 1986 edition includes newly discovered drawings and an essay by Tomo Kosuga. Bound in embossed linen and housed in a silkscreened slipcase.

About the Author
Masahisa Fukase (1934–2012) was a Japanese photographer known for his psychologically intense and highly personal work. A graduate of Nihon University, he gained international recognition for Ravens, a series often cited as one of the greatest photobooks of all time. His imagery, often dark and inward-looking, reflects existential themes and personal trauma. Fukase’s career was tragically cut short in 1992 after an accident that left him in a coma until his death in 2012.
