About the Book
Rites & Ceremonies of South East Asia by Vincent Peal is an unflinching visual journey into the heart of Asia’s most sacred and extreme rituals. Over the course of a year, Peal traveled from Indonesia to Japan, and across the Trans-Siberian Railway, immersing himself in communities where faith and tradition are deeply rooted. His lens captures the trance-induced self-mutilations of the Tatung in Borneo, the dramatic acts of sacrifice during Malaysia's Thaipusam festival, and the haunting cremation rites on the banks of the Ganges.
Blending anthropological insight with raw, journalistic photography, this bilingual edition (English/French) offers a powerful exploration of belief, pain, and transcendence, documenting ceremonies where the human body becomes a vessel for spiritual ecstasy.
