About the Book
The volume is structured as an illustration archive rather than a narrative sequence. Pages accumulate standalone images and dense, layered compositions drawn from across Kago's practice — work that engages body transformation, social taboos, and the mechanics of visual media. The format resists genre reduction: the book sits within the ero guro tradition but functions primarily as a collected record of graphic output. No editorial text interrupts the image sequence. The second edition reissues this material in the same physical format as the first, with the same cover specification.
Vol. 2 belongs to a three-volume series. The companion volumes — Shintaro Kago: Artbook vol.1 and Shintaro Kago: Artbook vol.3 — are also available, as is the Shintaro Kago Artbook Vol. 3 - Collector's Edition with slipcase. The full series is listed in the Artbooks & Artist Publications catalogue.
About the Artist
Shintaro Kago (b. 1969, Tokyo) is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator. Active since the 1990s, his work is internationally recognized for its engagement with ero guro — the erotic grotesque tradition in Japanese visual culture — approached through a graphic vocabulary that is precise, systematic, and often formally self-aware.
Recurring concerns in Kago's output include body transformation, the transgression of social taboos, and the deconstruction of media and narrative convention. His images frequently operate as visual arguments: the composition itself enacts the subject matter rather than merely depicting it. This structural quality distinguishes his work from illustrative grotesque and places it in dialogue with avant-garde graphic practice.
Kago's work has appeared in galleries, specialist magazines, and publications from avant-garde imprints including Hollow Press. The three-volume artbook series, published by The Mansion Press, represents one of the most comprehensive archival presentations of his illustration output available in print.
