SOLUTION issue 5 – Aleksandra Waliszewska
Published by Timeless Editions in 2025, this oversized hardcover volume brings together the most recent cycle of SOLUTION works by Polish artist Aleksandra Waliszewska in a single, landscape-format edition. At 22 x 30 cm and 460 pages, it is substantially larger than preceding volumes in the series, including PROBLEM 5. The book consists entirely of new artworks and is neither a reprint nor a compilation of earlier Problem/Solution publications.
About the artist
Aleksandra Waliszewska was born on January 30, 1976, in Warsaw, Poland, into a four-generation matriarchal lineage of artists. She graduated with distinction from the Academy of Fine Arts (ASP) in Warsaw in 2001, in the studio of Professor Wiesław Szamborski. Working across easel painting, gouache, drawing, and print, her imagery draws on Balto-Slavic folklore, including the figure of the upiór, alongside the historical precedents of Pieter Bruegel, Francisco de Goya, and Hieronymus Bosch. Recurring motifs include supernatural figures, empowered female protagonists, apocalyptic urban landscapes, hybrid creatures, and cats, rendered in a gothic, surreal, and at times gory register.
Her work has extended into film and music culture: she co-wrote and appeared in the short film The Capsule (2012, directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari), contributed to the animation Piwnica (2016), and worked on The Lure. Her imagery has also appeared alongside projects involving Nick and Susie Cave, Maurizio Cattelan, and the fashion label The Vampire's Wife. She has held over twenty solo exhibitions internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the M.K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Lithuania, and her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the DESTE Foundation, and the National Museum in Gdańsk.
