Corinne Day's on-set photography, edited by Sofia Coppola
The Virgin Suicides is a photobook published by Important Flowers / Mack Books in May 2025, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sofia Coppola's first feature film. The book is built from Corinne Day's original on-set negatives — images made during the production of the 1999 film — and edited by Coppola herself under her Important Flowers imprint.
The editorial approach sets this publication apart from a conventional production document. Rather than providing a chronological or promotional account of the shoot, the book organizes Day's photographs as a sustained visual study: bedrooms, dresses, suburban exteriors, still lifes, portraits, and moments between takes that move between character and actor without resolving that ambiguity. The sequencing attends to mood and atmosphere rather than narrative progression, and the resulting object holds its distance from both the film and the novel it adapts.
New texts by Sofia Coppola and Jeffrey Eugenides accompany the photographs, positioning the book at an intersection of source novel, film adaptation, and photographic work in its own right. Eugenides's novel and Coppola's film share a quality of suspended observation; Day's photographs extend that quality into still images, and the texts acknowledge the triangulation without collapsing it. The book will be of direct interest to readers engaged with Film Books & Film Culture, as well as those following Corinne Day's photography, photobook publishing, and artist-edited image books more broadly.
Design is by Anamaria Morris for Joseph Logan Design. The book is documented at Lokator100 with original photography.
Sofia Coppola
Sofia Coppola is an American filmmaker, writer, and producer whose work is closely associated with themes of youth, femininity, isolation, and emotional distance. The Virgin Suicides (1999) was her first feature film and established many of the tonal and thematic concerns that continued through Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, and Priscilla.
Important Flowers is Coppola's editorial imprint. Under it, books are personally selected and edited by Coppola and move across film, photography, art, and fashion — not as neutral documents, but as objects shaped by her own visual and editorial sensibility. This Virgin Suicides photobook is published under Important Flowers in collaboration with MACK.
