“Tokyo on the Brink of Sanity” is a black-and-white photobook by Yoshio Mizoguchi that follows Tokyo – especially Shinjuku – from the late 1980s into the 2000s, when the collapse of the economic bubble slowly seeped into everyday urban life. Across 188 images, Mizoguchi depicts the metropolis in a state of disreality: between consumption, nightlife, eroticism and seemingly ordinary routines.
Portraits, street scenes and quick snapshots move between erotic tension and banal situations, opening a view into bars, underground zones and anonymous corners where an atmosphere of undirected desire, energy and diffuse anxiety emerges. Shinjuku appears as a dense field of urban desires in which the boundary between private longing and public space becomes unstable.
The book contains 192 pages in a 225 × 270 mm hardcover with texts in Japanese and English. The edition is limited to 500 copies and is aimed at collectors of Japanese photography, Tokyo photobooks, street photography and documentary work from the bubble and post-bubble era.
