TTP — Hayahisa Tomiyasu
TTP (Tischtennisplatte) by Hayahisa Tomiyasu is a serial documentary photobook built around a single fixed frame: a public ping-pong table in Leipzig, observed from the window of Tomiyasu's student apartment over several years. Published by Mack Books and winner of the MACK First Book Award 2018, it belongs to a tradition of long-form, structurally rigorous work where formal constraint generates meaning.
About the work
The premise is deliberately narrow: the camera does not move, the subject does not change, and the years pass. What shifts is everything else. The table becomes a sun bed, a counter, a meeting point, a play structure, an exercise platform, a temporary refuge. Table tennis itself is nearly absent. The photographs accumulate into a dry, precise record of how public infrastructure is quietly colonised by everyday life — the gap between designated use and actual use being, in effect, the book's subject.
The humour is structural rather than performed. Nothing is staged, nothing captioned for effect. The repetition of the frame makes the variations legible, and the variations make the repetition worthwhile. Within contemporary serial photography, TTP stands as a clear reference point for this mode of observation.
About the author
Hayahisa Tomiyasu was born in 1982 in Chigasaki, Kanagawa. He studied photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University before relocating to Germany, where he became a master student of Peter Piller at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.
His practice centres on close, long-term observation — returning to a single subject until the accumulated images reveal what a single photograph cannot. TTP, his sustained study of a Leipzig ping-pong table in public life, combines formal restraint with a dry attention to how people quietly reshape the spaces around them.
