Japanese Landscape Photographer Working in Large-Format Black-and-White
Born in 1971, Toshiki Nakanishi is a Japanese photographer whose practice centres on large-format black-and-white photography of remote, elemental landscapes. His images attend to terrain stripped of incident — surfaces where geological time and memory are the primary subject rather than human presence or narrative.
Nakanishi's approach draws on minimalism and metaphysical observation. The work does not dramatise its subjects; instead it registers them with a deliberate, unhurried stillness. Geological formations, light conditions, and the texture of land before settlement recur across his series as material for sustained attention rather than spectacle.
Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, provides the dominant landscape in his published work. Its scale, sparse human imprint, and geological character make it a fitting subject for photography concerned with pre-human presence. New Land: Pre-Hokkaido Landscapes is the title available through Lokator100, published by Case Publishing. Nakanishi received recognition at Hokkaido Photo Festa 2022.
Titles by Nakanishi are held within the Photobooks collection at Lokator100.
