In New Land – Pre-Hokkaido Landscapes, Toshiki Nakanishi documents the Daisetsuzan mountain range in central Hokkaido as a metaphysical and geological frontier. Shot in stark black and white, the images evoke a world untouched by modern perception, drawing parallels to extraterrestrial terrains. Before Japanese colonization and renaming, these landscapes were known by their Ainu names, and Nakanishi’s work restores some of this original otherness. The book becomes a visual record of ancient, sacred terrains that resist human categories and historical erasure.

About the Author

Toshiki Nakanishi (b. 1971) is a Japanese photographer known for his large-format black-and-white landscape photography.
