About In a Dark time, the eye Begins to See - The Art of Julia Soboleva

In a Dark time, the eye Begins to See is an artbook dedicated to Julia Soboleva. It presents a wide selection of her mixed-media works in print. The edition is published by The Mansion Press and focuses on her method of painting and collage over found photographic imagery.

Across the sequence, Julia Soboleva builds images where light and darkness share the same surface. The work moves between clarity and disturbance. It is structured as a set of visual narratives rather than a linear story. In a Dark time, the eye Begins to See is suited to readers collecting artbooks, artist publications, and contemporary collage practices.

Soboleva’s themes include madness and reality, as well as family and taboo. The book frames these concerns through an understated sense of absurd humour. Julia Soboleva uses the photographic image as a ground, then interrupts it. The result is a controlled tension between recognition and alteration.

About Julia Soboleva

Julia Soboleva is a Latvia-born, UK-based mixed-media artist. She works by painting and collaging on found photographic imagery. Her practice reflects on madness and reality, building scenes with ominous tones and restrained absurd humour.

Soboleva has explored family, taboo, and transgenerational trauma in her work. She earned an MA in Illustration at Manchester School of Art (2018). She also works as an educator and freelance designer.
