Sketches and Ads from Paper Rodeo, 1995–2001
Multiforce Shit gathers the drawings, sketches, and advertisements Mat Brinkman produced for Paper Rodeo outside the main pages of his comic Multiforce. Paper Rodeo ran from 1995 to 2001 out of Providence, Rhode Island, and was the primary publication of the Surreal & Experimental Comics-adjacent Fort Thunder art collective — a loose community of artists whose work shaped the direction of underground comics and zine culture in that period. The material collected here is peripheral in the literal sense: marginal space, filler ads, incidental drawings. In Brinkman's hands, that margin becomes its own territory.
The book is 36 pages, printed in deep opaque black and white, and bound in a cover printed in bronze ink on Fedrigoni paper. The format is compact — 14 x 14 cm — which suits the source material: these are small, dense images that reward close attention. The edition is limited to 1066 copies. Published by Hollow Press, the Italian publisher known for its careful production of underground and experimental comics.
Brinkman's broader practice extends well beyond the zine context. He is the creator of the cult board games Cave Evil and Warcults, both of which draw on the same grotesque, dark-fantasy visual language evident in the Paper Rodeo work. Other publications in the Lokator100 catalogue include Teratoid Heights (Museum Edition) and KAP TRAP.
About Mat Brinkman
Mat Brinkman is an underground artist and game designer associated with the Fort Thunder collective in Providence, Rhode Island. His comic work — dense, grotesque, and rooted in dark fantasy — appeared throughout the run of Paper Rodeo (1995–2001) and established him as a distinctive voice in experimental comics. He is the creator of the cult board games Cave Evil and Warcults, which extend his visual worldbuilding into tabletop form. His work moves between illustration, comics, and game design without settling into any single category.
