About Painting
Painting is a compact leporello photobook by Toshio Shibata, published by Chose Commune, unfolding as a continuous journey through landscapes that feel both engineered and intimate. The project brings together 16 unpublished colour photographs, centred on Shibata’s precise approach to landscape photography and his long-standing interest in man-made structures embedded in nature.
The format matters. This hardcover concertina (20 pages, 21 × 27 cm) can be expanded into a single, flowing sequence, or displayed vertically using the ribbon on the spine, echoing the logic of a hanging scroll. The result is an object that treats landscape photography as something closer to painting: a measured surface, built from colour, rhythm, and careful framing.
Shibata is known for rigorous compositions that reduce scale and foreground structure. In Painting, artificial formations, channels, slopes, and constructed terrains become calm abstract fields beneath daylight. The photobook’s pacing makes the Mediterranean-style “travel” narrative unnecessary; instead, Painting stays with a single question: how the contemporary landscape becomes image.
About Toshio Shibata
Toshio Shibata (born 1949) is a Japanese photographer widely associated with landscape photography that foregrounds the meeting point of natural forces and human engineering. Working with a large-format camera, he is known for meticulous framing, crisp detail, and compositions that often minimise conventional markers like horizon and scale.
Shibata studied painting and has exhibited internationally since the early 1970s. His work has been shown at major institutions, and is held in prominent museum collections. Across his practice, “constructed landscapes” are not treated as documentary subjects, but as formal structures: water, concrete, rock, and infrastructure organised into quiet, abstract compositions.
