A haunting photographic journey into the hidden world of urban pigeons, captured with empathy and raw elegance.
About Pigeons
British photographer Stephen Gill offers a haunting yet empathetic portrait of one of the most overlooked urban species: the pigeon. Pigeons is not a romantic ode nor a zoological document—rather, it’s a deep dive into a parallel world, captured from the bird’s perspective. Gill's camera crawls beneath bridges, slips behind metal struts, and perches silently among twisted wires and forgotten corners of the city.
What emerges is not pity, but awe: these are survivors. Nesting in rust and grime, scavenging through post-industrial ruins, they have created a vernacular architecture from our leftovers. Gill’s approach subverts the anthropocentric view and offers a new lens on adaptation, resilience, and dignity. The presence of juvenile birds—rarely seen and almost mythological—adds a tender, even uncanny quality to the series.
This signed edition is bound in rough linen with a stark graphic cover, echoing the raw materiality of its subject. A quiet, confrontational, and necessary book.
Note: This is a used copy. The cloth cover shows minimal signs of use (see photos). Overall, the book is in very good to near fine condition.
