About Sub Sole

Sub Sole (Latin: “beneath the sun”) is a photobook by Massao Mascaro, published by Chose Commune, made between 2017 and 2020 across the Mediterranean. The work follows the mythic itinerary of Ulysses while staying close to present-day realities: borders, crossings, and the lives of people moving through Ceuta, Naples, Athens, Palermo, Istanbul, Tunis, and Lampedusa. Sub Sole keeps the Mediterranean as both geography and narrative field, where politics and everyday presence coexist.

Across 168 pages, Mascaro sequences 81 duotone photographs that read as encounters rather than reportage. The images carry a soft focus, tight cropping, and shallow depth of field, creating a tactile surface. In Sub Sole, the Mediterranean is not a backdrop but a lived space marked by displacement. Text by Federico Clavarino accompanies the work, adding an additional layer of reading without steering the photographs.

About Massao Mascaro

Massao Mascaro (born 1990 in Lille) lives in Brussels. He holds a Master in Photography from BlankPaper Escuela (Madrid) and has taught photography since 2019 at the Brussels Fine Arts Academy. His practice balances autobiography, topography, and politics. In the Sub Sole photobook, Mascaro’s approach uses soft focus and close framing to ask how people relate to the cultural and geographic spaces they inhabit. He is represented by Galerie C (Neuchâtel).

Packaging & Shipping

We pack books to arrive in the condition described: protected corners, rigid backing, paper cushioning, and a sturdy outer package. Heavier or collectible editions receive an extra layer of protection. Any defects are documented on the product page—packing doesn’t hide condition, it reduces transit risk.

We ship from Germany, usually on the next business day after payment. Germany: typically 2–5 business days, EU: often 3–7 business days; international depends on destination and customs. Tracking is included for all services and is provided once the parcel is handed over to the carrier. During peak periods, transit times may extend. See the Shipping Policy.

Returns are possible within 30 days of delivery (e.g., if the item doesn’t match the description or you changed your mind). Please contact us before sending anything back—we’ll provide the return address and the best return option. Items should be returned in the same condition as received. Once the return is received and checked, we refund to the original payment method. See the Refund Policy.
