About The Fire That Drank The Shadow - The Art of Julia Soboleva

The Fire That Drank The Shadow is a large-format artbook by Julia Soboleva, published by The Mansion Press. Across 318 pages, Soboleva builds dark art scenes by painting and collaging over found photography. The book reads as a sequence of images rather than a linear story.

The work moves between portraiture, family fragments, and staged tableaux. A familiar face can slip into an altered mask. A domestic interior can turn into a set for quiet threat. This artbook keeps a steady tension between intimacy and distance.

The palette stays restrained. Blacks and greys dominate, interrupted by warm reds and pale greens. Grain, brushwork, and paper texture remain visible. In The Fire That Drank The Shadow, these surfaces matter as much as the subject. They keep the images close to the material process, not a polished digital finish.

Soboleva’s method is direct. She uses found images, then adds paint and collage to reroute meaning. The result is neither purely photographic nor purely illustrative. In The Fire That Drank The Shadow, that hybrid language supports themes of memory, taboo, and transgenerational trauma, with brief notes of absurd humour.

For collectors of artist publications, this Julia Soboleva volume offers a dense, consistent body of work. The hardcover format and Munken 150 g paper support the muted tonal range. If you follow contemporary collage, illustration, or dark art, The Fire That Drank The Shadow sits naturally within that field.
