About the Book
TIBET is the expanded new edition of Shinya Arimoto’s long out-of-print debut photobook Portrait of Tibet (1999), now including previously unpublished images. During several trips in his twenties, Arimoto travelled through the wider Tibetan cultural region – across parts of China, India and Nepal – living, eating and sleeping alongside nomads, pilgrims and urban residents whose portraits fill this book.
Shot entirely in monochrome, the 118 photographs capture a Tibet on the verge of rapid social and economic change, balancing intimate close-ups with wide landscapes and village scenes. Published by Zen Foto Gallery as a high-quality hardcover, TIBET spans 176 pages, is bilingual (English/Japanese) and limited to just 1,000 copies – an essential title for collectors of Japanese photography, documentary and portrait work focusing on Tibet and the Himalayas.

About the Author
Japanese photographer Shinya Arimoto (born 1971, Osaka) is a leading figure in contemporary Japanese photography, known for his intense street portraits and long-term documentary projects. After graduating from Visual Arts Osaka in 1994, he began working in Asia; his early series in Tibet earned him the prestigious 35th Taiyo Award in 1998 for Portrait of Tibet.
In 2008 Arimoto founded Totem Pole Photo Gallery in Tokyo, an artist-run space that has become a hub for independent photography and his ongoing ariphoto selection series. His later books – including Tokyo Circulation, Tokyo Debugger and Tokyo Strut – brought him international recognition and led to the Tadahiko Hayashi Award and the Photographic Society of Japan’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Exhibiting widely in Japan, Europe and China, Arimoto continues to explore the relationship between people, urban space and landscape; TIBET remains a key work that reveals the roots of his photographic language.
