A World of Eikoh Hosoe — 2025 New Edition by Seigensha
First published by Seigensha in 2006, A World of Eikoh Hosoe: Spherical Dualism of Photograph is a single-volume survey of eleven series made across four decades of one of Japanese photography's most consequential careers. This 2025 new edition returns the book to print eighteen years after its original release, with pages printed on four different paper stocks — a production decision that allows each body of work to be encountered on its own material terms.
The eleven series gathered here trace the full arc of Eikoh Hosoe's practice: Man and Woman (1961), Ordeal by Roses (1963), Kamaitachi (1969), Embrace (1971), Taka-chan and I (1997), Why, Mother, Why? (2004), Tatsumi Hijikata Butoh Compendium: Scab and Caramel (1989), The Butterfly Dream (2006), Gaudi's Universe (1984), Luna Rossa (2000), and Ukiyo-e Projections (2004). Taken together, they move from the charged intimacy of his early collaborations with Tatsumi Hijikata and Yukio Mishima through his later meditations on architecture, myth, and landscape. The range is substantial; the sequencing within the volume holds it together.
The book is published in Japanese. Buyers seeking an English-language introduction to Hosoe's work may wish to consider the Eikoh Hosoe – English Edition published by MACK.
