About the Book

Eikoh Hosoe book: a major MACK monograph on Japanese photography

This Eikoh Hosoe book is a substantial English-language monograph on one of the defining figures of postwar Japanese photography. Published by MACK in 2021 and edited by Yasufumi Nakamori, it is designed as a primary reference work rather than a compact overview. The scale of the volume and its editorial framing give it the character of a long-term research book as much as a collectible photobook.

The publication brings together Hosoe’s major photographic series while also extending attention to lesser-known collaborative works with writers, critics, dancers, and artists. That broader structure is important. It places Eikoh Hosoe photography within a wider field shaped by literature, performance, film, and visual art, rather than isolating it as a purely photographic practice.

The book also helps position Hosoe historically. It reflects his role not only as an image-maker, but also as a curator, teacher, and organiser within Japanese photography. References to figures such as Daido Moriyama, Yayoi Kusama, Yukio Mishima, and Shuzo Takiguchi make the volume especially useful for readers interested in the networks around post-1945 Japanese art and photobook culture.

About the Author

Eikoh Hosoe

Eikoh Hosoe, born in 1933 in Yamagata, is one of the central figures in the history of Japanese photography. Since the mid-1950s, he has worked across image-making, curating, teaching, and institutional development. His practice helped move photography in Japan away from older documentary models and toward a more complex intersection of art, literature, performance, and film.

Hosoe was also deeply involved in the structures around photography. He co-founded Vivo, later helped establish the Photography Workshop, and influenced later generations of photographers, including Daido Moriyama. For that reason, this book is not only an artist monograph. It is also a compact entry point into the wider history of postwar Japanese photography.
