Eikoh Hosoe photography and books
Eikoh Hosoe belongs to the central generation of artists who redefined Japanese photography after the war. His work moved away from straightforward documentary realism and toward a more theatrical, subjective, and psychologically charged image world. That shift is one reason Eikoh Hosoe remains so important for readers of photobooks and photography history.
Many readers first encounter Eikoh Hosoe through his collaborations. The best-known of these involve the writer Yukio Mishima and the dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, but his work extends well beyond a single partnership. Across books, exhibitions, and photographic series, Hosoe connected photography to literature, performance, film, and avant-garde culture.
For collectors, researchers, and readers interested in postwar Japanese photography, Eikoh Hosoe books function both as visual works and as historical documents. They are especially relevant within the broader context of Japanese photobooks, artist monographs, and the networks around VIVO, Daido Moriyama, and experimental image-making in Japan.

About Eikoh Hosoe
Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2024) was a Japanese photographer and filmmaker whose work emerged from the experimental arts of postwar Japan. Born in Yonezawa, Yamagata, and later active in Tokyo, he became known for black-and-white photographs shaped by erotic tension, mythic references, performance, and an often unsettling psychological charge.
Hosoe’s importance lies not only in individual images, but also in the structures around them. He co-founded VIVO in 1959, worked across photography, film, and publishing, and influenced later generations of photographers. His orbit includes figures such as Yukio Mishima, Tatsumi Hijikata, and Daido Moriyama, which makes his books especially important for readers interested in the wider culture of Japanese avant-garde photography.
