About the Book
Asakusa is a powerful photobook by Dutch photographer Ronin de Goede that immerses the viewer in the hidden world of traditional Japanese full-body tattooing, centered around the studio of Horikazu, a legendary tattoo master. Shot between 2011 and 2020, the work spans years of close contact with the artist, his clients—including yakuza members—and their rituals, lives, and gatherings. Combining raw, high-contrast black-and-white images in the are-bure-boke style with more intimate, documentary moments, de Goede captures not only the surface of bodies and streets but the textures of trust and tradition. The book includes 154 photographs and is presented in a slipcased hardcover edition, limited to 1000 copies.

About the Author
Ronin de Goede (born 1978, Netherlands) is a Dutch photographer with a background in graphic design and fine art. Working exclusively in black-and-white analogue photography, he uses a Leica MP with Kodak Tri-X film to capture ephemeral scenes filled with texture, light, and shadow. His visual language draws on the legacy of Japanese Provoke-era photography, blending the everyday and the surreal. De Goede prints all his images in his own darkroom in the woods near The Hague, emphasizing a raw and handcrafted aesthetic.
