At Night Gardens Grow — 2026 New Edition
At Night Gardens Grow moves through the backwoods of a place both real and imagined, formed as much by memory as by a specific geography in Maine. First published in 2021 by STANLEY/BARKER, the book disappeared within months of its release. This 2026 edition reshapes the work from within: ten previously unseen photographs have been added, three removed, and the sequence and physical design reconsidered — not as revision but as continuation.
Pia-Paulina Guilmoth returns to the work five years on, having transitioned in the interim. The photographs are encountered again through a body and a language that have come into alignment, allowing currents that lived within the work from the outset to surface more clearly. The images stand with one foot in contemporary America and the other in a more ancient register — gathered around baptisms, spider silk monuments, funerals, house fires, holes carved into rock, and birth. Carefully constructed large format photographs sit alongside more instinctive documentary images, moving through found and fabricated landscapes that resist fixed location. The setting remains deliberately unstable: never fully named, yet immediately familiar.
The physical design has been reimagined. The book is wrapped in a recycled dust jacket created by Guilmoth using petals and earth, marked with symbols drawn from her practice. Beneath it, exposed stitching gives way to a sequence of previously unseen photographs of spider webs, printed on uncoated stock. Design by Sheret; printed by MAS Matbaa. Guilmoth lives and makes art in rural central Maine. Working primarily with large format analogue photography, her practice explores transformation, belonging, and the natural world.
