About the Book
Flowers Drink the River by Pia‑Paulina Guilmoth is an 80-page large-format photobook that documents two years of photographic work in rural Maine, coinciding with the beginning of the artist’s gender transition. Captured using a large-format analogue camera, the images depict quiet, immersive scenes from forests, fields, and riverbanks — where light, natural materials, and human presence interact in ritualistic and sometimes surreal compositions.
The photographs include ephemeral constructions made from spider silk and flowers, encounters with nocturnal animals, figures immersed in mud and foliage, and traces of domestic life in remote landscapes. Blending staged elements with long observation, the book presents a personal exploration of place, transformation, and belonging.
Designed with particular attention to materials, the book features a Swiss ¾ binding with a cloth nameplate, a contact print reproduction tipped inside, and a cover made from found paper treated by the artist. The result is both a photographic object and a quiet visual narrative.
Flowers Drink the River reflects themes of transition, environment, and gesture — offering a layered portrayal of a specific time, body, and landscape.
