About the Book
Yōkai are supernatural creatures that dwell in shadows, in forgotten places, or hidden in the attic. Some bring luck, others terrify by scattering red beans or clinging silently to people’s backs. Few can see them—fewer still understand them.
Shigeru Mizuki, the world’s greatest Yōkai hunter, didn’t just save them from oblivion—he documented them with near-photographic precision. At a time when Japan turned away from its ancient legends, Mizuki reawakened them, reviving a forgotten world. Without him, Totoro and Miyazaki’s magical beings might never have existed.
This book presents an extraordinary collection of Yōkai illustrations by Mizuki—each named, in black and white or color. An index at the end details each spirit’s nature, historical background, and cultural origins. A unique work blending art, folklore, and the fantastic.
Note: The book is new and unread, but has minor shelf wear at the corners (see photos). The interior is in perfect condition. The price has been adjusted accordingly.

About the Author
Shigeru Mizuki (1922–2015), born Shigeru Mura, was a celebrated Japanese manga artist, author, and historian. He is best known for his works on Yōkai—traditional Japanese spirits and demons—including GeGeGe no Kitarō, Kappa no Sanpei, and NonNonBâ. A World War II veteran who lost his left arm in combat, Mizuki also depicted wartime experiences in his later work (Shōwa, Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths).
He was a pioneer in bringing Japanese folklore into popular culture and is praised for his distinctive style that contrasts highly realistic backgrounds with cartoonish characters. His work is both artistic and scholarly, earning him numerous awards, including the prestigious Will Eisner Award and prizes from the Angoulême International Comics Festival.
