The Fire That Drank The Shadow
The Fire That Drank The Shadow is a 318-page hardcover artbook by Julia Soboleva, published by The Mansion Press. The work is built through collage and painting on found photography, assembled across a sequence of self-contained scenes printed on Munken 150 g paper, 19 × 22 cm.
About the Work
The book occupies the boundary between beauty and decay without resolving it. Faces recur. Family fragments surface and dissolve. Post-Soviet echoes run through the imagery without being named or explained. The tone is controlled throughout, and the pacing is suited to slow, repeated viewing rather than linear reading. Each scene functions as a discrete unit; the accumulation produces a coherent, if uneasy, whole. This is an Artbooks & Artist Publications title that rewards sustained attention.

About Julia Soboleva
Julia Soboleva is a Latvia-born, UK-based mixed-media artist. Her process combines painting and collage on found photographic imagery, building scenes that function as fragments of narrative rather than illustrations of a single story. Her work returns to themes of madness and reality, family, taboo, and transgenerational trauma, often cut with a dry, absurd humour. She completed an MA in Illustration at Manchester School of Art (2018) and works as an educator and freelance designer. Further titles are available in the Julia Soboleva Artbooks collection, including In a Dark Time, the Eye Begins to See – The Art of Julia Soboleva.
