About the Book

The Fire That Drank The Shadow Julia Soboleva — artbook overview

The Fire That Drank The Shadow is a large-format Julia Soboleva book published by The Mansion Press. Across 318 pages, the work is built through collage and painting on found photography, assembled as a sequence of uneasy, self-contained scenes.

The book stays on the thin boundary between beauty and decay, where memory becomes material: faces, family fragments, and post-Soviet echoes recur without being explained. The tone is controlled rather than theatrical, and the pacing rewards slow viewing.

About the Author

Julia Soboleva

Julia Soboleva is a Latvia-born, UK-based mixed-media artist. Her process combines painting and collage on found photographic imagery, building scenes that function like fragments of narrative rather than illustrations of a single story.

Her work returns to themes of madness and reality, family, taboo, and transgenerational trauma, often cut with a dry, absurd humour. She completed an MA in Illustration at Manchester School of Art (2018) and works as an educator and freelance designer.
