Crystal Bone Drive — Surreal Sci-Fi Comic by Tetsunori Tawaraya
Crystal Bone Drive is set in a toxic, mutant-saturated future where the body has become currency. At the centre of this world is the Crystal Bone Xchange, a black-market organ trade operating on desperation and biological debt. The illegal drug LSREE circulates as the only reliable means of survival — until an unnamed figure begins to resist the system. The 32-page narrative is compressed and relentless, with hand-drawn imagery that pushes biomechanical decay into psychedelic abstraction.
This 7th edition, published by Hollow Press, is limited to 1000 copies. It is printed entirely in silver ink on black PLIKE paper — a production decision that is inseparable from the work's visual logic. The high-contrast result eliminates colour in favour of density: intricate linework rendered in metallic silver against a matte black ground. The physical object reflects the aesthetic of the story it contains.
Tetsunori Tawaraya works across underground and experimental comics with a visual language drawn from sci-fi, horror, and punk. His practice has been distributed through both zine circuits and established art publishers, and Crystal Bone Drive sits within a body of work that includes Tetsupendium Tawarapedia, Grayworld, and Assassin Child. Each title extends a consistent preoccupation with bodily transformation, social collapse, and hallucinatory detail.
This edition is relevant to collectors and readers working through Surreal & Experimental Comics, bio-mutant aesthetics, and the broader tradition of Japanese underground comics published in English. Photographs of the actual copy are provided.
