Allure of Pharmakon — ファルマコンの蠱惑
Allure of Pharmakon (ファルマコンの蠱惑) is Takato Yamamoto's third collection of illustrations, first published in 2004 by Editions Treville and reissued in 2023 as the New Black Edition to mark the 25th anniversary of the Pan-Exotica series. This copy is signed by the artist inside the front cover.
About the Work
The book gathers work from a period that represents the consolidation of Yamamoto's mature visual language — the arabesque-grotesque imagery, androgynous and ambiguous figures, dreamlike horror, and densely layered decadent ornament that define his Heisei Decadence style, itself an evolution of the Ukiyo-e Pop lineage he developed through the 1990s.
Key works include Vanilla, With Hesitation, Night Ditch, and Makeup of Darkness, which move between fantasy and an atmosphere of unresolved dread. The Magus is devoted to symbolist imagery. The centrepiece is Doll's Mound, a composition built around ball-jointed dolls that stands as one of the most cited works of this period in Yamamoto's output.
Edition Notes
The 2023 New Black Edition is a redesigned reissue of the 2004 original. Physical changes include a black patterned sleeve, a blue-silver cloth cover, and charcoal grey endpapers. The content is unchanged — this is not an expanded edition. The colophon date is 31 August 2023; the official retail release date was 16 August 2023.
About Takato Yamamoto
Takato Yamamoto was born in 1960. Working across illustration, book cover art, and advertising, he developed and refined a visual mode he termed Ukiyo-e Pop, later extending it into what he calls the Heisei Decadence style — a synthesis of traditional Japanese woodblock print aesthetics with arabesque-grotesque ornament, decadent figuration, and dreamlike horror. He has produced illustrations for aesthetic, fantasy, erotic, and historical novels, and is a member of the International Ukiyo-e Society.
