Coffin of a Chimera is the sixth monograph by Takato Yamamoto, published by Editions Treville in 2024 as part of the Pan-Exotica series. This New Black Edition — a newly designed reissue — marks the 25th anniversary of Yamamoto's debut.

The 2024 New Black Edition carries a colophon date of 29 February 2024 and an official retail release date of 19 February 2024. Earlier editions of the title appeared in 2010, 2014, and 2018. This reissue updates the book's design and presentation; the content of the 52 works remains unchanged.

About the Work

Yamamoto developed the Ukiyo-e Pop style before refining it into what he terms Heisei Decadence — a practice that draws on the formal vocabulary of classical Japanese printmaking and directs it toward baroque bodily imagery, grotesque and arabesque structures, and an atmosphere of sustained aesthetic excess. Coffin of a Chimera represents a culmination of his Heisei Aestheticism: the 52 works gathered here extend the subjects and visual logics of his earlier collections, pressing further into the territory of decadence that defines his mature output. Yamamoto is a member of the International Ukiyo-e Society. His illustration work spans aesthetic, fantasy, erotic, and historical novel publishing, as well as book cover design and advertising.

About Takato Yamamoto

Takato Yamamoto was born in 1960. Working across illustration, book cover art, and advertising, he developed and refined a visual mode he termed Ukiyo-e Pop, later extending it into what he calls the Heisei Decadence style — a synthesis of traditional Japanese woodblock print aesthetics with arabesque-grotesque ornament, decadent figuration, and dreamlike horror. He has produced illustrations for aesthetic, fantasy, erotic, and historical novels, and is a member of the International Ukiyo-e Society.
