NOSFERATU — Takato Yamamoto

Takato Yamamoto's NOSFERATU (ノスフェラトゥ) is a vampire-themed art monograph published by Editions Treville in 2018. The copy offered here is the regular edition, signed by the artist inside the front cover, and belongs to the second printing dated 30 April 2024.

The volume gathers 49 full colour paintings, 9 underdrawings, and 3 earlier works, all centred on Yamamoto's characteristic male and female figures rendered as nocturnal vampires — figures seeking one another's blood, eroticism, and life force. An 8-page black-and-white manga is also included. Two essays accompany the paintings: one by manga artist Moto Hagio, one by Yamamoto himself. Book design is credited to Mayumi Kubota and Azusa Nakai (Upright); translation by Don Kenny.

NOSFERATU was released six years after Necrophantasmagoria Vanitas and twenty years after Yamamoto's debut book Scarlet Maniera. It represents a sustained engagement with the Dracula mythology, filtered through Yamamoto's Ukiyo-e Pop and Heisei Decadence style — a mode of illustration developed across aesthetic, fantasy, and erotic fiction commissions, and recognised by the International Ukiyo-e Society.

Edition and printing

First edition issued 30 November 2018; second printing issued 30 April 2024. This copy is the second printing of the first edition. Three versions of NOSFERATU were produced: the regular edition (dark red embossed cover, this copy) and a special numbered limited edition of 500 copies (bright red satin embossed cover). This copy is the regular edition.
