Divertimento for a Martyr is Yamamoto's fourth collection of illustrations, first published in 2006 and reissued in this redesigned New Black Edition in 2023, marking the 25th anniversary of the work.

About the Book

The imagery concerns princely and noble figures surrendering to a world of darkness, corruption, and decay. Elaborate baroque ornamentation frames a recurring subject: momentary pleasure before submission to something unclean. The visual register is dense and ceremonial, consistent with Yamamoto's Heisei Decadence style — a refinement of the Ukiyo-e Pop approach that defines his practice. The figures are rendered with a precision that holds aesthetic pleasure and dissolution in deliberate tension.

About Takato Yamamoto

Takato Yamamoto was born in 1960. He developed the Ukiyo-e Pop style and refined it into what he terms Heisei Decadence — a mode of illustration that draws on the formal vocabulary of classical Japanese woodblock printing and redirects it toward aesthetic, erotic, and fantastical subject matter. His work spans illustration for literary fiction, book cover art, and advertising. He is a member of the International Ukiyo-e Society.
